What Are You Looking Forward To?

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.  – 1 Peter 1:3

“When I’m twenty-one I can drink!” the young man recalled enthusiastically to the audience. He addressed the wedding reception and told us what he was looking forward to in his youth. He was excited about being able to drink alcohol. It was a cherished milestone to make it to twenty-one and finally have the freedom to drink. It broke my heart to listen to the young man’s hope for his future. Was that really what motivated him to press on toward his destiny? How shallow and dangerous. What are you looking for? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Jesus left this earth in His resurrected body and promised His friends that they would see Him again. Their Hope was alive! Their Hope was Jesus Christ Himself—the unchanging, victorious, conquering Savior of the world! And He promised all His followers they would be with Him forever! Now “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast” (Hebrews 6:19). That, my fellow saint, is something worth looking forward to!!! How do we live this way?

It helps me to read passages of Scripture where Jesus promised to come back, or where His disciples wrote about His imminent return. Memorize those passages. Encourage others to look for Christ’s return. Pray for His return. Every night, before we go to sleep, my wife and I pray and ask the Lord Jesus to come back that night! What are you looking forward to?
